The Nextfest Arts Company presents Nextfest, Edmonton's multidisciplinary arts festival dedicated to the cultivation and professional development of the emerging artist. Our annual June festival runs for eleven days with over eighty performances in multiple venues throughout the Edmonton downtown and Alberta Avenue area, celebrating new theatre, dance, cyber-art, music, painting, photography, filmmaking, poetry. Nextfest encourages emerging artists to explore inter-disciplinary work, multi-media, and new technologies.

Festival Producer Bradley Moss created Nextfest in 1996 in response to the lack of development and practical opportunities for the emerging artists. “I was interested in creating a meeting place where young artists can exchange ideas and feed one another’s creativity and establish artistic relationships” – says Moss in the Nextfest Anthology.

Festival Director Steve Pirot expanded Nextfest to a ten-day format in 2002, Under Steve’s guidance Nextfest has increased from 300 to 400 emerging artists and now draws over 7000 folks down to our various venues. Steve has also expanded the new technology area and increased timelines to help the new work become further developed.

Nextfest 2012
Call For Submissions from young emerging theatre artists

We will begin receiving theatre submissions Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, and will
continue to receive submissions after this date. Proposals received earlier rather
than later will have greater opportunity for consideration and dialogue.

Nextfest’s target is a demographic of emerging artists under the age of 30, whom
have made personal commitments to a career in the arts, are not yet recognized
with professional associations, and are in need of professional development and
exposure. If this describes you, then…

From playwrights we are looking for un-produced scripts at any level of
development. For each submitted script, we ask for a developmental history of
the work, a personal assessment of its current state, and a proposed direction for
its development. Script submissions should be unbound, single-sided, paginated,
and include a title page with contact information.

If your proposal is atypical of a playwright based creation, then we ask that you
address: your intention, your proposed process, the resources you have, the
resources you don’t have, and what it is you want/need from Nextfest.

From local designers, directors, actors, stage managers, etc. we are
looking for submissions that address your professional development goals.
Submissions do not have to be attached to a specific creative project. Resumes,
rants, & manifestos are welcome.

There is neither application form nor application fee.

Submissions should be delivered to
